Happy 2018 everyone! It has been quite some time since my last post. I’m thinking about maybe posting monthly recommendations ‘From Me 2 U’ but no promises!
For the month of January I shall be giving American rock band Sunflower Bean a wee shoutout! I have always had a massive soft spot for lead female vocals who offers a gentle and dreamy sound against the loud and aggressive band music. Ellie Rowsell from Wolf Alice would probably be the first example that springs up to mind and they are one of my all-time favourites however Sunflower Bean has managed made their way through my indie Spotify playlist!
My favourite track of theirs is ‘Easier Said’. This number has everything I love about indie music in it. The repetition of electric guitar riffs, catchy beats and easy lyrics. It’s just a chill song which makes everyone want to dance and have a good time, nothing too much – the balance is perfect. Not to mention Julia Cumming’s angelic vocals makes me want to sing along to this tune.

The first time I saw Sunflower Bean live was them supporting Wolf Alice at the Barrowlands last year. Wolf Alice have never tried to hide their love for the band and often said SB is one of their favourites. What I find is different between the two bands is that Sunflower Bean’s sound feels more youthful and rebellious.
A prime example is another track from their first album Human Ceremony, “I Was Home”. This track is definitely a lot ‘rowdier’ than Easier Said however the repetition of the lyrics makes you indulge more on the instruments. It shows off the band’s rocky vibe with the electric guitar dominating the song. Also the contrast in vocals between lead guitarist Nick Kivlen and lead vocalist Julia Cumming – whom also plays bass – makes the track sound funkier overall!

Sunflower Bean’s 90’s artsy sound mixed with a bit of Wolf Alice, Spring King and a bit of Circa Waves I think will draw many UK indie listeners their way. Me being one of them already!
From me to you,
